Château Cartier 2017
Weather Conditions During the Growing Season
The winter of 2016–2017 was marked by a severe water deficit, with precipitation 30% below seasonal averages. The first half of the season was cold, but the winter ended with very mild temperatures. Budbreak occurred early, and the very beginning of spring remained mild, which stimulated growth. On the nights of April 27 and 28, temperatures dropped to -6°C in some areas, causing significant frost damage. After these nights—which were disastrous for many wineries in the region—hot, dry conditions persisted until the end of spring. This led to water stress in the vineyards. Starting on June 25, heavy rains marked a shift in weather patterns. The summer was dry and rather cool. Veraison was early and rapid. The welcome rains in early September allowed the grape skins to reach full maturity.
